Defensive Strength Could Decide the Title

As followers checking the season through 12BET Mobile may remember, Arsenal surrendered the Premier League title to Manchester City last season after William Saliba missed the final 11 matches through injury. Before Saliba was sidelined, Arsenal had held a five-point advantage over City and appeared capable of sustaining their challenge. Yet a title race is rarely straightforward, and as the saying goes, you have to cross mountains and rivers before reaching the destination. Saliba’s absence disrupted Arsenal’s defensive balance at exactly the wrong time.

This season has been different. Saliba and Gabriel have been available far more consistently as Arsenal’s preferred central defensive partnership. Saliba has featured in virtually every competition apart from selected League Cup fixtures, while Gabriel has made 28 appearances across the season despite occasionally missing league matches. Their regular availability has played a major role in preserving Arsenal’s defensive structure, communication, and overall stability.

Liverpool provide another useful example. When Virgil van Dijk suffered a season-ending injury only five matches into a previous campaign, Liverpool eventually lost eight league games. They still finished third because several rivals also struggled, but Manchester City ultimately claimed the championship. This season, Liverpool have again faced defensive setbacks after Joel Matip was ruled out, yet Jurgen Klopp has managed the situation effectively by introducing young defender Jarell Quansah when required. Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have remained the main partnership, and that continuity has become one of the reasons Liverpool have been able to stay near the top of the table.

Tottenham experienced a similar lesson earlier in the season. Their strong opening run was interrupted not only by the absence of attacking creator James Maddison but, arguably more seriously, by losing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven from central defense at the same time. The team briefly lost momentum as its defensive structure weakened. Tottenham reduced some of that uncertainty with a winter defensive signing, but analysis followed through 12BET Mobile suggested that genuine stability would remain difficult without Van de Ven fully restored. Ange Postecoglou may continue speaking confidently about Tottenham’s ambitions, but any serious title challenge requires a dependable back line.

Manchester City have understood that principle for years under Pep Guardiola. The club has repeatedly invested in elite central defenders, bringing in Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, and more recently Croatia international Josko Gvardiol. The result is a squad with enough depth and versatility to adjust to different formations without significantly weakening its defensive foundation. Whether Guardiola uses a traditional back four or asks defenders to move into midfield, City generally have several players capable of adapting to the system.

Manchester United, by contrast, have spent much of the season dealing with constant disruption in defense. Injuries have clearly played a major role, but assessments circulating through 12BET Mobile have also questioned whether Erik ten Hag entered the campaign with enough reliable alternatives in central defense. His preferred partnership appeared to be Lisandro Martinez alongside Raphael Varane, yet Martinez suffered a foot problem only a handful of games into the season and subsequently missed more than 15 matches.

Ten Hag was forced to rotate through numerous alternatives. Victor Lindelof partnered Varane, veteran Jonny Evans returned to play important minutes, and Harry Maguire regained a significant role despite having previously appeared close to leaving the club. Maguire then suffered an injury of his own, continuing a season that had already become a defensive roller coaster. Beyond the original Martinez and Varane combination, United experimented with numerous partnerships, but few provided the level of reliability required for a team hoping to compete consistently.

Martinez has now returned, but his presence alone does not guarantee that United’s defensive problems will disappear overnight. The next challenge comes at home against a Newcastle side looking for an opportunity to revive its own campaign. United will need more than individual quality in central defense; protection from midfield will be equally important, particularly with Casemiro also returning to the team.

As supporters following the match through 12BET Mobile will see, Manchester United’s ability to regain defensive stability may depend heavily on whether Casemiro can protect the space in front of Martinez and the rest of the back line. Football can change quickly, and sometimes a smile is the best way to face uncertainty, but there is no hiding from defensive weaknesses at the highest level. If United cannot provide better protection in midfield and maintain a settled defensive structure, the gaps that have troubled them throughout the season are likely to remain.
